If you have sympathy for someone, then that means that you
know what they are going through. You can show a friend or neighbor that you
can sympathize with them by giving them a sympathy gift basket. Sympathy gift
baskets are a great idea for people who have not only experienced a sorrowful
or negative experience in life, but are especially great for those you wish to
congratulate. Everyone I know enjoys receiving gifts. If you have the
opportunity to give a gift then do it because you will feel good about making
someone else happy. Sympathy gifts can be given to help someone out, make them
feel better, or just to pick up their spirits every once in a while.
When
choosing to give someone a sympathy gift, the first thing you want to think of
is whether the person is going through a positive or negative time in their
life. If the person’s experience is negative, then stock a basket with items
that will be encouraging to them. Products like flowers, comedic movies, and
comfort food are always nice to receive. Throw in a gift card to a store you
know they like to frequent. Definitely try to stay away from items that remind
the person of their negative situation. For example, if a relative just died,
try to avoid things that you know would remind the person of their lost
relative. To me, this would just make me feel more down in the dumps.
If the
gift recipient is going through a particularly positive time in their life,
gift baskets work really well for them too. For example, if you know someone
who has just had a baby, and you yourself have kids, stock up a basket with
things you know they will need. No one knows what a new mother will need better
than a mother herself. Throw in things like cloth diapers for spit ups, diaper
rash cream, and maybe some lullaby CD’s. You could even whip up a booklet on
tried and true new-mom tips. Make sure not to forget the parents as well. Give
the new mother a gift card for a couple hours at a spa and the new father a
gift card for maybe an hour of golf. Throw in a card that offers your cooking
or cleaning services every once in a while.
Whatever
the occasion, you can always come up with creative ideas for a sympathy gift.
Remember, sympathy does not always point to negative situations; they can be
positive too. Being the receiver of a sympathy gift shows that the giver of the
gift really cares for that person. Be creative, get crafty, and customize a
gift that fits the occasion and person receiving the gift. Creating the gift
will be much fun as well, since you know the person and truly want to make them
feel better or just to let them know they are appreciated. Put your heart into
the gift and the receiver will appreciate the gift so much more, knowing that,
in fact, it did come from the heart.
